New Exhaust

Postby kpdornan » Wed Jun 29, 2016 8:39 am

Hi,

the exhaust on my 2003 1.8 svt has seen better days.

I am looking to put a stainless steel one on but don't want anything too loud.

My back box and centre section both need to be replaced.

I have looked into a JapSpeed cat back one and have spoken to the company who assure me that it won't have any future problems with MOT etc and it is not too loud, slightly more than the standard Mazda one he says?
Also looked at MX5 parts backbox with a standard centre section.
Obviously don't want to get one to find that I go deaf on any drive and annoy every street in the morning?

Any advice would be appreciated.

thanks

Kevin

Standard centre with Cobalt back section from Moss.

I run a Cobalt cat-back on my Eunos and it sounds just right IMO.

I may even go silenced decat for a little bit more growl.

It's nice without sounding raspy.

Bear in mind whatever you buy will sound different at first until it carbons up a wee bit after a few hundred miles.

Hi

thanks for that.

not being the biggest expert in the slightest just a bit worried that what I do now will come back to haunt me come MOT time regarding emissions.

Nice to hear that you can fit standard section and then a stainless backbox though.

thanks

Cobalt for Mk2/2.5 is backbox only so would need standard mid-section.

Mk1 setup is cat-back.

Kevin

Not sure where you are based. I got a custom made Stainless Steel exhaust from Stainless Creations in Falkirk. Fantastic job, cat back system using a cobra back box.

Its a great sound (just what I wanted) on my 2.0 MK3 sport. Cost around £650.00 built / fitted in 1 day

Just to add, I also used Stainless Creations when I had my old Skoda Fabia vRS and I was really chuffed with the quality of their stuff.

Kevin,
For years, a "default" choice of SS exhaust has indeed been the Mx5Parts single exit, and for good reason.
Clearly, we have to retain the CAT, which Mk1's pre 94 dont with the result they are too loud for some.
I fitted the above to our 2002 car a few months back with a new centre section (mild steel) and it's a peach.
What you get is subdued tone at lower rpms, and a nice "ripping cloth" sort of old Alfa-esque at above 4k +.
The downside is at the engine's resonance period of around 3k rpm...which as you know is 70mph, there is a slight back box boom period.
Not bad, but it's there.
I'm in Falkirk, so if it's worth it to you, by all means drop by for a demo.

Edit...just noticed you are in Tayport. :(
On the other hand...any old excuse eh?
"Just going for a paper dearest"
There is always an imbecile you never bargained for. Usually in a Tescon carpark with a dented Zafira minus hubcaps
