It might not be that fast, it’s not full of the latest gadgets and tech, and the earliest models are well over 20-years old now, but the MX-5 remains the best-selling two-seater sports car in history.

Launched in 1989 in an effort to create a modern Lotus Elan contender, the no-frills approach, decent speed and sharp handling quickly made the MX-5 a favourite with motorists and journalists alike.

Now, with the launch of the new MX-5, we’ve decided to take a look at the history of perhaps the greatest ever Japanese-British collaboration, share our thoughts and some cool old photos too.
