Well here's the rub.....

So im after a Mk3, my budget although limited (circa £4k) maybe a little more for the right car.
Anyway ideally i would like a 2.0 sport (06 plate) however im realistic and will look at good 1.8s in the right colour with service history and in good condition. I have posted in the wanted section as im a long term forum user and have had mk1s 2s and 3s before.
So last night im trawlling Gumtree and i spot a nice sounding 1.8 in Silver with low miles for an 06 plate. Price is pretty competitive. Its late so i text the number and arrange to view at 10am today.
So i travel the 25 miles, arrive on time, owner pleaseant enough. The car is advertised as FSH and very good condition. In the photos its on a private plate but has reverted back to 06 original plate.
Car is in the garage, owner reverses it out. First impressions, bodywork looks very good. Check all panels, roof etc, decent branded tyres, 3 months MOT remaining. Owner takes me for a spin on the backroads, drives well.
Now to the paperwork. Mazda cant provide any servicing for the car after a phonecall, owner has no receipts for anything. V5 has 5 owners, quite a lot, methinks.
Review MOT history from previous paper Mots and online.
In year 5 car only does circa 300 miles in 12 months between MoTs. Highest mileage is 15,000 in one of the years, quite a few fails with advisories, wheel bearing, danage to subframe, poor repair noted on one advisory.
Alarm bells started to ring, pre checks i have got the price down £200, post checks we are now £300 of the already competitive starting price. Chat with the owners about the concerns, roof catch sticks, takes 2 of us to raise the roof.
Finally i do what i should have done last night as i always do, i HPI the car.
Stolen recovered at 3 months old. Cat D insurance claim. Owner very aplologetic, going to phone the previous owner (he gas had the car 5 months).
So a sorry state of affairs. Explain that this should all be in the advert, waste of my time.
So who is the April Fool (initially me) but on reflection, i could have handed over circa £3200.
So im still looking. If anyone is looking and wants to avoid a lemon pls pm me.
Probably not right to share the detail of car reg on the forum, but i would hate anyone to get stung!

It's dangerous out there, be careful when buying an MX5.

Although the current owner may not have known about the Cat D issue, they presumably knew there was not a FSH and should not have advertised it as such. That's simply dishonest.

Thing is, it may not have been that bad. A stolen car can be driven a short distance, parked in a lock-up, then recovered 3 months later without turning a wheel. But without any history you just don't know that. Combined with the advisories, this is definitely one to walk away from. There's always another car for sale.

It might be worth giving Paul @ Roddison Motorsport a call to see if he has any mk3's in your budget.

There is no need to go to a Mazda dealer to have the service done even on a new car or within the first three years.

The majority of people do still used the manufactuers dealer until the warrany runs out.

So it could have been serviced most years but very few independents other than MX5 specialists apply for free access to the Mazda Electronic Service record so the car would not be on the system if it was serviced else where.

In saying that after hearing the story, it seams to me that a good few owners have bought the car, found out it's history and have traded it in asap to make it someone else's problem, just what a dealer will do if they have a problem car, they send it to auction.

In the end, the best thing was done and that is walk away.
