Gearbox undercover

Postby derekb » Thu Dec 04, 2014 10:08 pm

I got under the car today in order to take off the gearbox undercover, (the metal tray) which partly disintegrated. my question is, Is this just to keep grot from the gearbox
area, it has a soft pad which I presume is for sound deadening. Is this tray a necessity, just what purpose does it serve.

It must serve some purpose since the Mk2 and Mk2.5 with 6 speed gearboxes had one of a different design to clear that gearbox. I assume it is to do with noise reduction.

The tray has to come off to drain and refill the gearbox oil.

The engine under tray on the other hand improves airflow through the radiator and helps prevent road grime getting in there and also hides the corrosion on the front chassis rails

I took the gearbox under tray of my Mk 2 at around 80,000 miles, 10 years old to change the gearbox oil.

The sheet metal around the front two mounting holes on the tray had virtually disintegrated.

Two of the M6, 10mm AF mounting bolts sheared in the chassis.

I priced a new one at something like £200, now nearer £100 at MX5 parts.

I've just bought one from eBay as mine was also flaking round the bolts. Managed to get a good one for £20.00

I was tempted by the £20 pound one it looked sound. But I think I will make one doesn't look that complicated and will be satisfying Just one seized bolt.
