Goodwood Sports Cars & Jim Clark Room Run..

Postby Sprockutt » Tue Sep 30, 2014 2:55 pm

I had the pleasure of taking the car down for a drive to see Steve at Goodwood Sports Cars in Berwick-upon-Tweed to have a valuation carried out. I had tried contacting the club a while back but nobody does this for the club up here anymore. So I contacted Steve and finally got round to going down last week. I really needed this done as I've spent a considerable amount of cash on the car since buying it and I would only have received market value if anything drastic happened to it. Previous insurance companies have been ok with self evaluation forms backed up with photographs but RH Classics were demanding a proper inspection by a club member or a specialist.

The main reason I had held off was that the off side of the car needed painting to a higher standard than had previously been carried out. This was done by IA Bodyshop in Dalmarnock who had been highly recommended by Andrew at Automek who re-built my engine. I was absolutely delighted with the standard of the job carried out by them and it is also a fantastic colour match which I was worried about. I then had to wait a couple of months and take the car down to my buddie from work who is a proper detailer and he worked his magic with a Porter Cable Polisher, cutting polish, glazes and wax to complete the bodywork renovation. I had tried my best with elbow grease but you really need a proper polisher to remove years of swirl marks etc. to get the paintwork looking A1.

Steve was very nice guy and we had a long chat about MX5's and cars in general. It was very interesting to hear all about his set-up of importing rust free examples from Japan. I think most of these have a deposit placed on them before they even arrive in the UK. After dealing in these cars for years it's getting more and more difficult to source good examples and he has to compete against Japanese buyers to import the best cars from over there.

After leaving Steve's place I drove to Duns to check out the Jim Clark Room which was well worth the visit. But it'll be even better in a couple of years as they are building a huge extension that will house the best of Jim's cars from over the years.

I've been to Steves a couple of times, he usually has a good selection available, nice chap, knows his cars.

The Jim Clark room is a good visit, will be interested to see it when extended.

Out of interest what value do you have against your car?

Hi Ian,
I was pleasantly surprised to receive a valuation of £5k from Steve. As you say, he knows his cars and has probably seen and driven more mk1 MX5's than most. So for him to rate it so highly was an unexpected validation of the time and effort I've put into the car to get it into it's present condition.

cheers,

David

Now if we do another Borders Raid next year and base ourselves a bit further east we could take in the Jim Clark Room and possibly do a group visit to Goodwoodsportscars to have a look at the newish imported cars.

Interesting! Bought my eunos from Steve a year ago and a regular visitor to his website. He's moved premises since i was last down and now seems to work in conjuction with AK Automotive in Rowlands Gill west of Newcastle. As said he's importing fresh rust free cars from Japan as he's finding most UK examples need a fair bit of work before he can sell them on.
Nice guy - real mx5 enthusiast.

Steve did say he was moving to new bigger and better premises that might be better suited to a group visit than his current temporary small unit. He also mentioned that he's looking to bring in not just Mk1 but rarer Mk2's, RX7's and even Mini's. So an open day/visit to Goodwood Sports Cars and the Jim Clark Room definetley sounds good to me.
