ICE ICE Baby - MK1 question

All things to do with In Car Entertainment and music in general (latest CDs, gigs, etc)

I have the so-called "Dixons" digital clock and cubby from the Mk2 in my Mk1. Personally I prefer digital clocks. I also have a BMW and the clock and cubby does look like it would be a pretty easy install. The illumination in BMWs is a reddish-orange so that will be out of harmony with most people's lighting. Don't know how easy it is to fix. I think BMW use orange perspex to get the light into the clock rather than orange bulb-condoms like Mazda use.

I'll try and post a pic of my cubby later. The lower slot on mine is larger than DIN and the radio/head unit was supported to a certain extent by the original cubby that was in place when I got the car. I cannibalised the cubby and fitted the new clock/cubby to it and then refitted the whole thing as a unit to ensure the hole was completely filled and the radio was properly supported.

OK, not a great pic because it's dark in the garage ATM...

Thanks for the photos guys. It gives me a great idea of how it will look when the job is done. The digi clock looks pretty good.

And the cubby looks big enough for the small packet of tissues I like to keep handy for when I'm brought near to tears if I see someone in a soft top with the hood up on a sunny day :P

The BMW clock has a plastic, red/orange coloured moulding over the bulb. Easy to remove and I coloured the bulb with a green felt tip. Looks OK to me, but I'm not that fussy.

Coloured bulb condoms are easy to get, and cheap. I used dashlights_auto_bulbs on e-bay, but they are no longer registered. A few other e-bayers sell them though.

So what is in the place where the window switches belong?
I'm not sure I follow what's been moved and why... :?

Ah right. I didn't realise that you could get electric mirrors for a 5. It is a MK2?

Sorry - just looked at your avatar. Have you fitted them yourself?

Made up a panel to fit clock and boost gauge with 323 electric window in the middle under stereo.. got the plastic from a sign maker which is easy enough to craft to shape. Needs to be 50mm gauges not 52mm (or 2") to fit... and a couple of wee switches and LEDs for the heated seats in the corners

Gauges came from Demon Tweaks but took 8 weeks to deliver and then I pulled them apart to create faces to match the OEM gauges!

.. and I do mean electric windows as I have no central console (Japan light weight carpet conversion).
