new challenge the £100 system

Postby monkey_biz » Thu Jul 28, 2011 11:35 pm

got a personal challenge from a guy from talk audio to build a system using as many new components as possible:
rules
got to be front components no coax speakers allowed
got to be multi amped
got to subwoofered up
got to be MP3 compatible
got to be installed correctly and safely
cables and wood not to be included in the £100 as it may interfere with safety

ive made a small start but will start the write up next week step by step. my head unit is in place but i had toi remove my Nakamichi first :( :( :( so its boxed back up and in the loft for another day as is my Phoenix gold stuff as my amp was nearly 10x the budget and worth more than my car

anyway......... roll on saturday making the front door baffle plates and adding sound deadening to the doors, pics to follow

quite interested to see how you go with this.
Look forward to your update as it seems quite a challenge.

tell me about it, have you ever tried to price up a system with so little money!!!! BUT with a bit of searching and wheeling and dealing this system may surprise a lot of people. doing a deal (hopefully) on a tiny bass tube that i can adapt. TBH its been more fun than throwing money at a system and the head unit ive just got is surprisingly good which is a shock.

roll on the wood cutting and deadening tomorrow weather dependant as ive got to work outside on the drive so i can get the doors fully open.

ok a start has been made before i got to work.
the bits i have collected so far.
Image
Orion 5 1/5" front components, really wanted 6" but at the price i cant complain
Legacy active crossover
may use my orion amps

and.............. the head unit
got this as new in box but pre owned, mp3 unit but no cd mechanism
Image

so door baffles, obviously the mk1 is fitted with 6" so smaller holes were required
Image

first a template to make full use of as much metal as possible
Image
then using ones favourite hole cutter....
Image
cut the holes out of a sheet of plywood first
Image
then using a scroll on slow speed cut them out and trim till they are a flush fit in the doors
Image

next up is cleaning the doors for deadening then applying the pads and fibreglassing in the baffles and attaching the often missed speaker raincoat.

this may be a while as cleaning of the gunk on the doors is a nightmare

and spend the week moving the tweeters and attaching them with bluetack, so far this is the best place for imaging and depth, remember these are £20 speakers!!!

Gutted, Was enjoying this thread! Out of curiosity, where were you going to install your sub, if indeed you were?
and where would or have you put your crossover?

i heard this with just the main speakers running off the head unit and was fairly impressed with the clarity, with amps and a sub, the £100 system could have been something really special.

hope the job situation improves and you get back in an mx5 soon.
