The Beggars Mantle Run ...

Postby Colin » Mon May 28, 2007 8:44 pm

... or, to give it its full name "The Jewel in the Beggars Mantle", also known as the Fife Run! This run is being organised on Sunday, 17th June by the North Scotland (South) subarea, or more specifically by Dave and Caroline for the NSS subarea, and all are warmly invited. Jewel in the Beggars Mantle? You'll have to figure that out for yourself!

Further details will follow soon, but if you fancy a run on some of Fife's finest roads with a picnic, then send me an e-mail or add a posting below.

Come one come all! :D
Cheers

Could this run involve a pilgrimage to Kirkcaldy?

Beggar's Mantle
This Fife duo consisted of Bruce Davies and Bill McArthur. Davies, from Kirkcaldy, started playing at the age of 14, but it was in 1983 with Beggar's Mantle that he became better known. The duo produced four recordings an continued performing till 1999. Bruce launched a solo career and is still touring and recording (visit his website at www.brucedavies.com).

Bill McArthur also toured and performed as Crann Tara with Stuart Duncan and Gillian Duncan (both ex-Jacobites). They performed under that name as well as Moonshine for eight years. Sadly, three months after deciding to cut down on work, Bill died suddenly of a heart attack in November 2002 aged 52.

A brave first try, but nope - this duo is named after the Beggars Mantle, the run is named after the Beggars Mantle ...

... but what is the Beggars Mantle?

Thanks Colin.

Bit of both. I reside in Fife and knew the saying and what it referred to. But could not recall the origin. Three cheers for Goggle. :P

Thank you for the invite. We would certainly have joined you all. However we go on holiday on 16th June and will be out of the country.

Almost made it last weeks trip to Skye but my husband fell ill on Friday night and we had to cancel. Just as well we did as he was off work all week.

Likewise we were on our way to the tracknight at Knockhill last night to watch the goings on and sustained a puncture on the Loch Leven Road!! Starting to think there is an owners club curse!!!

This puncture actually threw up a problem - will post it as a separate
query.

Kind regards.

The Fife Run is only a few days away and Dave and Caroline look as they're organising a cracker. Could you let me know if you're coming as Dave and Caroline are giving us a treat ... and they need to know how many to buy!

Here are a couple of photos from the "Jewel"

Hi Colin,

unless my car is fixed in the next couple of days, I'm going to have to miss out on this cracking run  Could bring my Polo courtesy car along, but everyone would laugh at me  and I would feel silly  ! Enjoy the day, assuming I don't make it.
