I am about to purchase my first mx5 in the near future (hopefully).The year of the car would be around a99-2000 at a rough guess judging by the prices I have seen and can afford.Can anyone give any tips on buying a car round about this age, what to look out for ect. Any info much appreciated

Hello Ali. welcome.

Buying an MX 5 is not really any different from buying any other car. £5K should get you a decent '99 or 2000. Look out for service history, lowish mileage, new MOT and general condition.

Cars are pretty bombproof generally, but do suffer from rust around the back wheelarches and under the boot lid. Under the bonnet, you might find corrosion around the fluid reservoirs where the power steering fluid has been spilled. Some cars suffer from siezed rear calipers, which cost about £110 each to replace, and there is of course the hoods, which are not easliy repaired, and a wee bit costly to replace.

Best advice, dont rush, have a look at a few, drive them, spend time with them, compare and select the best. Post questions here, there are dozens of folk out there happy to help

Look for a 1.8iS with ABS, 15" wheels, LSD etc
