Welcome,

I don't think you'll find many people here reccomending MG(T)Fs over MX-5s. :) Although £5000 will probably buy you a nice example of either.

Look out for rusty bits and gubbed engines. Engines in MX-5s are generally pretty reliable and longlived whereas the engines in the MGs do not have as good a reputation.

There's a wealth of buying advice out there on the t'internet. I'd start by searching this forum, then perhaps the national MX-5 club forum and perhaps then doing something similar for MGF clubs if I wanted to make an informed choice.

Of course, an MX-5 is the right thing to do. :D

Hello and welcome to the friendly forum.

As Skinny says, £5K will get you a nice one, only advice, take your time, look for an obviously well looked after example, avoid dogs which are tatty, look out for rust at the front end of the rear wheelarches, and under the boot lid. A nice long MOT is good, as this takes care of things like seized brakes, exhausts and the like.

The for sale section of this forum regularly comes up with nice cars, (I note you have been there already)

Watch out for damaged hoods, as they are not readily repaired, and moderatley expensive to replace

The MX 5 is pretty strong, mechanically long lived and of course cute and funky. Good luck with your search, if you go MX 5 you will not regret it.

* Surpressing some bad comments about MGF's

Welkom :D After handling a Beetle you shouldnt have too much trouble keeping an MGF out of the ditch... oops, did i just make an anti-MGF comment after all?

This is not directed at you Jasper, its a general thing.

Question...

What's the difference between a person that calls an Mx-5 Owner a hairdresser.

and...

An Mx-5 owner that slags off an MGF owner.

No membership needed, you have to put the pics on the net elsewhere (flickr.com, photobuck etc) then link them to this site. See the Img button above the text field :D
