54 Plate convertible rear window needed...please!

Postby bagdad » Tue Jan 28, 2014 7:11 pm

Hello ladies and gents.

I am new to this forum, and am really posting to help out my daughter and her boyfriend.

The rear glass on their '54 plate MX5 convertible was smashed in Dundee the other day by a mindless vandal.

I haven't seen the damage but he says the hood itself is intact and just the glass was damaged.

He has been quoted silly money for a replacement hood and other repairs.........around the £1000 mark.

I have tried to find the MX5 Scotland garage (owner Richard?) who posted on here previously but with no luck so far.

Any advice or pointers appreciated.

Thanks.

Bagdad.

Hi, sorry to hear about the damage, there really are some mindless morons about

I'm not too sure if the window alone can be replaced, though I'm sure someone here will know.

If you do end up replacing the hood then I'm just about to readvertise a brand new mohair one that I have. I can't speak for Dundee, but I know of a garage in Glasgow who fits them for just over £100, so it may just work out better than the insurance excess plus increased premiums.

You can always PM me.

Good luck getting it fixed out Ok.

Log onto the owners club forum

Richard Nicol still posts down there and may well have a spare window from an old Mk2 hood.

Folks.............thanks so much for posting replies so quickly.

He is only third party insurance, so no joy there.

I don't know much about these cars, but I'm sure he would be interested in any second hand hood available.

Glasgow is not so far out of the way for him.........better that than having to sell the car for buttons because he can't afford the repair.

Keep coming back to me.

Thanks again.

Also try Steve at goodwood sportscars, berwick upon tweed

http://www.goodwoodsportscars.co.uk/section550748.html

And Anthony at AK automotive near Newcastle

http://www.akautomotive-mx5.co.uk

Hope you get it sorted (and don't even think about paying £1000 - you could get a new soft top AND a hardtop for that kind of money)

You could look at fitting a new roof yourself - there are some good guides online - not too tricky but you need somewhere warm and dry to work at this time of year.

Hi, sorry to here what happened to the MX5's window, first time I have heard of anything like that being done to one in Dundee. Like previous poster Berwick cars are a good bet and I agree re price never pay a grand to have it fixed !!
Other person you can try for a quote/price/repair try Richard Nicol on mobile 07747 694152 he will guide/point you in the right direction.

cheers

Everyone..............thanks again for your great response.

I've been at work all day, but my daughter and her partner have been looking at the forum and making calls.

All I know at the moment is that they got a second hand hood in very good condition. It's been fitted to the car for about £250.

He was really quite desperate as the car was in a secure car park temporarily, and he has to commute by car.

You have all been great and saved a young couple a shed load of money...........they would have ended up selling it for hardly anything and been left with no car.

Regards.
