It would be more usual for the DVLA to want to know the year of manaufacture and give it a plate to match that date.

Hmm sounds like theyve cocked up and gave it a newer plate than they shouldve perhaps..
What was the last yr the mk1 was made

The last Mk1's where made in November 1997. So last ones would be a R plate perhaps an S plate if it sat around for a while!.

This is a import and it looks like the DVLA has very much messed it up and put it onto a later plate. Depending on your point of view this might be good or bad. If you want you might be able to get them to correct it to a more age appropriate plate.
A spreadsheet of Japanese VIN numbers can be found here, and will help you find out the approximate date of production. By the way for those with UK market cars this won't work as the VIN number is a different format.
http://hagar.zoomshare.com/files/roadster_vins.xls

It show mine as been produced in the first month of production in September 1989.

In August 1997, the SR Limited was announced to celebrate the eighth anniversary of the Eunos Roadster in Japan. Based on the M Package, the manual version (with Torsen limited-slip differential) weighed exactly 1000kg (2200lb) and was priced at 1,898,000 yen: the automatic weighed 30kg (66lb) more and cost 1,978,000 yen.

Two colour options were available: Sparkle Green Metallic (the same colour as that seen on the British Berkeley) and Chaste White (of the 700 examples produced, white was the most popular shade, accounting for 384 sales). The standard Momo steering wheel with airbag was employed (shortly after the launch of the SR Limited, dual airbags became an option), but it had highly polished seven-spoke alloys, black leather seats with light grey nubuck type inserts, chrome door mirrors, chrome dial surrounds, a CD/tuner, and a Nardi gearknob to distinguish it from the rest of the line-up.

Certainly looks like it could be your car, the wheels are wrong though probably changed at some point.
Hope this helps :D
