Save the 'MX5' Wave!

Postby PaulDS » Mon Jun 20, 2005 3:45 pm

Spotted a number of 'new' 5's in the area recently and waved enthusiastically with very little response. Noticed though that those who did not respond to my greeting had their hoods up even on mild days. I do get waved at by topless BMW's, MG's MR2's. Maybe things are evolving into 'wave at topdown roadsters'.
Anyone else noticed this?

My brother drives a Saab 93 convertible and my daughter a new electric roof Vauxhall Tigra , both have mentioned to me about getting waves from other topless drivers when driving topless themselves.

I was very late in waving to someone on Saturday - mind on other things. Then, after feeling bad, waved at every other 5 I saw that day just to receive odd looks and the odd scowl or two.

Yes, I'd agree there does appear to be a general topless camaraderie developing - had greetings from a couple of Caterahams, an Audi TT and even a Merc! Kinda makes up for the po-faced attitude which seems to prevail with the majority of other 5s I see.

Even got a wave from a biker as he zipped past the other day. Mind you, he obviously rates 5s as being "Number 1 car"...at least I'm assuming that's what his gesture meant!

Sorry for delay - I was away for a couple of days.

It wasn't me as I was driving a red Mk1 alhtough I was heading from Brodie to Lossie. Top down - sunglasses on - but not quite 53!

Strange thing though. I was over in Brunswick in Maine last week and saw stacks of 5's (college town and also large military base) they all waved, even when pedestrians waved at them. Seems our ex-colonials know how to do it.
Also, there is a car parts specialising in (as they call them) Miata customising bits and pieces. I will get a catalogue and if anyone wants anything brought back (providing not too bulky) I will gladly do it.
When someone gives you a pat on the back make damned sure they did not have a knife in their hand.

I got a wave from the first MX5 that I passed on the first day that I had my car but nobody has waved since, not even a chap who I saw twice who had the same white 'bar o' soap' car as mine. :?
